Erik J. Carlson, MD

Proudly serving the Greater Waterbury region, Dr. Carlson is dedicated to providing personalized care for all his patients of all ages. 


As a board-certified orthopedic surgeon and partner at Active Orthopaedics, P.C., he holds fellowship training from the Hospital for Special Surgery in New York City, and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at Yale School of Medicine.


Serving as the Co-Medical Director of the Orthopaedic Service Line at Waterbury Hospital and Section Chief of Orthopaedic Surgery at St. Mary's Hospital, Dr. Carlson's specialized training has prepared him for a career in sports medicine, as well as for his expertise in minimally invasive procedures.


Dr. Carlson is also passionate about helping guide the next generation of orthopedic specialists through his work as a Clinical Instructor for the Plancher Orthopaedic and Sports Medicine Fellowship, and the Shoulder and Elbow Fellowship.


Beyond his clinical duties, Dr. Carlson serves on the Board of Directors of the Connecticut Orthopaedic Society as Treasurer and President-Elect. He is also a member of the American Society for Surgery of the Hand, the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, and the Connecticut State Workers' Compensation Medical Advisory Board. Additionally, he is the Physician Director of the SONE Health Board of Directors and the Physician Supervisor of the Waterbury Hospital Orthopaedic PA.
