Hand, Wrist, and Elbow Fracture Care  FAQs

  • Why should I choose a hand and elbow specialist?

All board-certified orthopaedic surgeons have some training in hand and elbow surgery, but some choose to undergo additional training in this area. Dr. Carlson spent a year in New York at Hospital for Special Surgery performing complex hand and elbow surgery with world-renowned surgeons. The hand and elbow are extremely complex anatomic structures and careful, delicate attention needs to be taken during surgical procedures to ensure safety to vital structures, such as nerves and blood vessels, during surgery. In addition, specialized techniques are needed to minimize surrounding tissue damage during surgery to prevent stiffness and promote a successful recovery.

  • Is surgery always necessary for injuries or conditions of the hand and elbow?

Absolutely not! Most conditions and injuries of the hand and elbow are treated with non-surgical methods. This may include medications, therapy, or injections. Surgery is only indicated when these treatment options have not or will not work. Dr. Carlson is experienced in treating complex and simple hand and elbow conditions with and without surgery. He reviews all of the options with patients before recommending a treatment plan.

  • Is therapy needed after hand and elbow surgery?

Therapy is even more important following many specialized hand and elbow surgeries than surgery at other joints in the body. This is due to the delicate balance in the hand and elbow between motion and stability. Not only is therapy important, but often specialized splinting or bracing is needed to optimize post-surgical recovery and aid in the healing process. Dr. Carlson and the staff at Active Orthopaedics P.C. are experienced in guiding patients through the entire process of hand and elbow surgery and rehabilitation.

Dr. Carlson was courteous and practical, and ready to propose options. Despite the late Friday hour, he also spent extra time with me to discuss about other concerns.

I'm walking better than I have in months after my knee surgery. I'd definitely see Dr. Kaplan again should the need arise.
